Photos of the New Victory Bridge taken June 20th 2004
Very nice. Clean lines, fresh concrete, all modern, but perhaps a bit plain? My apologies to the designers/builders who I'm sure say otherwise. Yes, it's a technically exciting work of engineering, but it doesn't have that feeling that the old VB (or any other of that era for that matter.) gives you while passing. All that iron criss-crossing over your head, and diagonally along the sides. Perhaps it's just the kid in me that doesn't mind the inconvenience of stopping mid-span, for the chance to spy some sea vessel on it's way somewhere...
The new span however, does offer a better view, I was able to see the Outerbridge from it's apex.
A big thank-you to the mind that thought to include room for foot and bicycle traffic. Not everyone has the funds for a car, or cab fare.
Below are the plaques mounted on the bridge wall representing the various branches of service that took part in "The Great War". (Just in case you couldn't tell what they were, and didn't want to risk an accident by slowing down enough to see)
The pictures above of the old bridge were taken from the non-freindly-for-pedestrians lane (When the north-bound side had not been under construction yet). I discovered the bottom of the cyclone fence could be pushed out of the way for clearer shots. All the while cars coming head-on towards me, good thing it was a slow sunday morning. I did get some looks though...
